Is Donegal Worth Visiting? Donegal Named “Coolest Place On Planet” And Here’s Why
National Geographic makes a list of the world’s coolest places to visit every year. This list includes “culture capitals, hipster hotspots, wild escapes, and places that are generally cool.” It just came out with the Cool List for 2017, and who’s at the top? Donegal, which is wild and beautiful.
Unknown parts of the Earth always have their own special charm. Finding new places in the world is more than magical, whether it’s because of the windswept, empty beaches, friendly people in small towns, or vast, untouched landscapes. But what makes Donegal extra special is its “weather-worn coast dotted with sea stacks, Blue Flag beaches, and offshore islands.” Donegal is not so much an undiscovered land as one with a rich history that is starting to make a comeback. It has a rough coastline and green, rolling hills. Scenes for Star Wars: Episode VIII were filmed on the Inishowen Peninsula’s rolling hills last summer.

But Donegal is more than just its beautiful scenery. There are many beaches, like Magheroarty and Ballyhiernan Bay, that are great for surfing. There are also historical sites like castles and fortresses, and the Glenveagh National Park is a natural preserve with lakes, woods, raised boglands, forests, and mountains. And if you want to see the amazing view from the Wild Atlantic Way, a tourist trail that runs along the cliffs above the Atlantic, you can take a “shortcut” at Horn Head, which is a 4.5-mile loop that you can drive, walk, or ride a bike on.

On the list are also the cities of Santiago, Chile, which came in second, Helsinki, Finland, Greenland, Peru, and Aarhus, Denmark.
