Amsterdam Movies: #1 ‘Amsterdamned’ (1988)

The timeless Dutch horror film Amsterdamned was released in the late 1980s and transforms the tranquil canal belt that is often found in Amsterdam into a terrible nightmare. A hard-boiled investigator is called in to investigate when a number of dead bodies are discovered floating on the waterways of the city. During the course of his investigation, he realizes that there is something extremely horrible hiding beneath the surface of the canals.

Amsterdam Movies: #2 ‘Riphagen’ (2016)

Dries Riphagen, a criminal, worked with the Nazis for his own personal gain during the German occupation of Amsterdam, and also worked against Dutch resistance organisations. During this time, Amsterdam was occupied by the Germans. The exploits of Riphagen and his eventual demise are the subject of the film directed by Pieter Kuijpers.

#3 ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ (1971)

Sean Connery’s run as James Bond comes to a close with the release of the sixth and final “official” James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever. During this mission, James Bond goes undercover as a member of a diamond trafficking gang and learns that his archrival Blofeld is hatching a plan to use an orbiting laser weapon to hold the entire planet hostage. The beginning of the movie takes place in Amsterdam, and there are some shots that were taken of the Skinny Bridge, which is located on the river Amstel.

Amsterdam Movies: #4 ‘Ciske the Rat’ (1984)

A lonesome street urchin in Amsterdam in the 1930s struggles to make ends meet in the famous Dutch story Ciske the Rat by Piet Bakker, which serves as the basis for the animated film Ciske the Rat. Ciske the Rat was shot on location for a significant portion of the movie, and there are various sequences in the movie that represent Amsterdam’s industrial background. The film was honored with the UNICEF prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1984, and its opening song was a huge hit in the Netherlands.

Rachel Stein, a Jewish lady, returns to Amsterdam while it is under Nazi occupation so that she can work her way into the inner circles of the Gestapo. This is the story that is told in Black Book. In order to shoot this high-budget World War II thriller, renowned Hollywood director Paul Verhoeven traveled back to his home country of the Netherlands. Several scenes that were crucial to the plot were filmed in Amsterdam.

#7 ‘Kidnapping Mr Heineken’ (2015)

In 1983, a band of criminals was successful in kidnapping beer billionaire Freddy Heineken, who was one of the wealthiest individuals in the Netherlands at the time. After kidnapping their victim, these individuals make a ransom demand for a substantial amount of money and begin negotiations with the authorities. Their lack of experience, coupled with the fact that they are nursing personal grudges, ultimately leads to the failure of their schemes and, ultimately, to their demise. The plot of the movie is based on actual events, and it stars a number of Dutch criminals from history.

#8 ‘Alice in the Cities’ (1974)

Wim Wenders’ road movie trilogy is a series of low-budget films that are unified by their depiction of aimless drifters traveling around Northern Europe. Alice in the Cities is the first chapter of the trilogy, and it has received widespread critical acclaim. The protagonist of the movie is a German author who takes on the mission of reuniting a young girl named Alice with her family. After Alice’s mother is found to be missing in mysterious circumstances, the two start their journey together at the Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Movies: # 9 ‘The Sensualist’ (1974)

The Sensualist, also known as Turkish Delight, was the debut feature film for director Paul Verhoeven and starred a Rutger Hauer who seems much younger than his actual age. As is the case with the vast majority of Verhoeven’s body of work, The Sensualist does not shy away from graphic content and features a large number of sexually explicit sequences involving Hauer and his on-screen lovers. The actor portrays a skilled Dutch artist who is stationed in Amsterdam and who develops a passionate love affair with an intriguing girl from Alkmaar. The two cities are located in the Netherlands.
